We smoke in stairwells kiss in Castaic hills And my baby is made of love And if you see her digging and planting things into me don’t worry, she knows what she’s doing And now that you’re here the fear kicks in but still I can’t wait and thank God I found you when I did in the most unsuspecting place my life keeps changing in so many ways it’s strange to me and thank God I found you where I did on a bridge over hell We undress in quiet room and open windows and someday... we’ll have a horse and a home and I’d be a fool to think I could possess her soul but maybe her body could be my clothes And now that you’re here the fear kicks in but still I can’t wait and thank God I found you when I did in the most unsuspecting place my life keeps changing in so many ways it’s strange to me and thank God I found you where I did on a bridge over hell

Beachwood 04:11
I drove up Beachwood To meet you in the canyon that was so long ago We slept in a kid bed the blanket barely covered up that was so long ago You are a great mountain range that I keep seeing in different ways clothed in sunlight, clothed in the night you are the heart the blood of my life I drove down Franklin to meet you in the holly hills that was so long ago We smoked on the rooftop the blanket barely covered us that was so long ago You are a great mountain range that I keep seeing in different ways clothed in sunlight, clothed in the night you are the heart the blood of my life

Junkies 03:59
The junkies on Prince Ave are roasting in the desert sun looking for the warmest glove the gutterpunks stroll down Country Club always wearing shades of black always starting right back I don’t really wanna I don’t really wanna go home not yet! I don’t really wanna I don’t really wanna go home not yet! The progesstive in coffee joints are always making moot points always tryna’ gird their loins The rednecks in monster trucks are worshipping American Jesus and the red, white and blue that cleaves us I don’t really wanna I don’t really wanna go home not yet! I don’t really wanna I don’t really wanna go home not yet! The rainbow sunset explodes with orange mammatus clouds I just wanna drive around The junkies on Prince Ave are howling at the desert moon tryna’ get back there soon I don’t really wanna I don’t really wanna go home not yet! I don’t really wanna I don’t really wanna go home not yet! not yet not yet….

Let’s stay here awhile the nighthawks are hunting Let’s stay here awhile A long while Let’s stay here awhile Just naked and laughing the world’s gone to hell So I’m holding your brave hands Let’s always stay wild In this ocean of creosote Let’s stay here awhile A long while Let’s honor the child His love is an ocean Let’s stay here awhile holding his brave hands

I remember the day when I came home everything rearranged my new skin glowing just to ride my bike through the cemetery just to ride my bike in April All my bedspreads were changed the walls painted green all mistakes are erased in the birth of a day oh the immensity within a being oh the immensity of April you were new and ripening before I knew you walk to work in hospitals near bodies of water oh the lavender blooms the colors of your heart oh the birds of paradise in April we were born from things that tear we were born in the blink of an eyelash oh the profundity of life in each other oh the profundity of April ….. of April... of April...

about

In late 2017, John Goraj left the Los Angeles hustle for Tucson’s contemplative desert beauty. Seeking an artistic revival, it wasn’t long before the ex-folk troubadour joined forces with Derek Cerretani (bass, vocals), Johny Vargas (guitar) and David Foley (drums) to form Soda Sun.

Aptly titled Stay Here, Soda Sun's first LP marks them as one the burgeoning music city of Tucson’s most captivating studio-centric bands straight from out of the gate. Mixed by Larry Crane (Sleater-Kinney, She & Him, Elliott Smith), the quartet delivers textured, cerebral rock that’s pieced together by their raw, collective passion and the subtle, organic turns of their 35-year-old reel-to-reel Tascam 388.

Stay Here was recorded over the past year throughout the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic in their home studio in the Blenman Elm neighborhood. The band found solace and sanity in the blossoming of their unified artistry, creating reflective and heartfelt music that they feel listeners can relate to in times as uncertain as 2020.

Soda Sun sees its debut as a mélange, the themes of which encompass family and home, the sociopolitical divide, the cultural milieu of Tucson, Goraj’s experiences living in Los... more
